Specific Conservation Plans
In the management of the reef the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority use an ecosystem based approach, the entire area is mapped on a zoning map identifying what activities can happen in which areas. This is because there are many people whose livelihoods rely on the money earned by the reef through, tourism, fishing, water activities and shipping that there would be many people without a source of income if all activity was stopped. So rather than completely restricting usage of the water in the area of the reef they have just limited which activities can take place where. Along with the Zoning plan the government have used Climate Change Action Plans to try and raise awareness, reduce impact on the reef and to improve the quality of the corals.
The Climate Change Action Plan 2007-2012 was set out by the Australian Government, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, in an attempt to secure the future of the reef. It had four objectives:
Objective 1 Target Science,
Objective 2 A resilient Great Barrier Reef Ecosystem,
Objective 3 Adaption of industries and communities,
Objective 4 Reduced Climate Footprint.
All of these objectives aimed to have a coordinated response to the threat of climate change. It was a five year program to coordinate efforts from people from every area to aim to reduce the impacts of climate change.

The outcomes shows that the steps taken were valuable and represented the first five yearplan to which many other plans will follow. You can download and read the official outcomes of the action plan on the Australian governments website. Click Here.
Since the last action plan was terminated a new plan had to be set up. Climate Change Action Plan 2012-2017, aims to rebuild the health of the reef to hopefully making it more able to cope with climatic changes and other stresses it may face. The new plan has six objectives rather than four. They are:
Objective 1: Improve the capacity of Reef managers to build the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef Ecosystem,
Objective 2: Support adaption of Great Barrier Reef industries and communities so that they can continue to make wise use of the reef and be active partners in building ecosystem resilience,
Objective 3: Encourage action that reduces the rate and extent of climate change,
Objective 4: Provide strategic and targeted science that supports management decisions and adaptation planning,
Objective 5: Effectively communicate to support climate change adaption,
Objective 6: Foster strong stewardship among individuals and groups that interact with the reef.
